Advantages of ASPs

Utility Computing, Software on Demand, or Pay-As-You-Go can all refer to the same concept.
The Application Service Provider (ASP) software delivery model has quickly evolved because it offers some significant advantages over traditional approaches to acquiring software. Here are some of the most important advantages:

Especially for small businesses and startups, the biggest advantage is low cost of entry and, in most cases, an extremely short setup time.

The pay-as-you-go model can be significantly less expensive than acquiring, building and managing the infrastructure for an internally hosted application.

The ASP model, as with any outsourcing arrangement, can reduce head count. IT headcount tends to be relatively expensive and specialized so this is frequently advantageous.

The ASP model also eliminates specialized IT infrastructure for the application as well as supporting applications. For example, if the application you want to use requires a MS-SQL database, you would have to support both the application and the database.

The ASP model can shift Internet bandwidth to the ASP, who can often provide it at lower cost.

Having the use of software that is feature rich and specialized, without having to make a large investment up front, is a key factor fueling the growth of ASP software solutions.

In addition, the growing complexity of software and software upgrades makes the ASP model very attractive. Distributing complex applications to the end user can be expensive from a customer service standpoint, and upgrades make the problem worse. ASP solutions eliminate a large portion of this issue by providing upgrades with miniimal end user involvement.
